One more major part of combat is your RISK. This works both when you are attacking, and when you are being attacked. During combat when a "!" appears over your head, and you press one of the buttons, you can activate the ability. These special moves can be applied to the O, Triangle, and Square buttons. You are only able to attack enemies that are in this sphere, and you can do that by targeting any body part that is in range.Īfter the first boss is defeated, you will gain access to Chain and Defensive combos. Tapping the O button brings up the combat sphere. Thankfully the combat system in the game is very intuitive, and easy to jump right into. The basic rule of thumb with this part of the weapon customization is to always upgrade your weapon’ s hilts when you get the chance to so you always have the maximum amount of expandability on a weapon.Īs with any hack and slash RPG, combat prowess is essential, and Vagrant Story is no exception. Just as with the Materia in Final Fantasy VII, you are able to attach magical jewels to weapons and shields in order to increase their affinity or other abilities. The only real reason to do this is to use more than one gem on a weapon. You are able to disassemble weapons to take a better hilt or blade and add it to another one. Weapons come in two parts, the blade and the hilt. Damascus can only be found by playing with a Clear Game Data save.Ī good idea of weapons to have on you at all times are: A bladed bronze or hagane sword for Human, Beast, and Dragon classes.Ī silver piercer (you’ ll find one in the game called the Soul Kiss) for Undead.Ī staff (you’ ll also find one of these) to use against Phantoms.Ī polearm to use against Dragons and to reach objects far away. Hagane can be found or made by combining Iron and Bronze. Bronze, Iron, and Silver are able to be found in the game. There are four main types of weapon materials, as well as a hidden type that is only found during your second time through the game. As you collect more and more weapons, you will be able to take them to workshops and combine the parts to make even more powerful tools of destruction. Great game in all it´s aspects, a truly underrated masterpiece.At its core, Vagrant Story is a classic hack and slash dungeon crawl where you go from dungeon to dungeon to build up your skills and find new items. I really liked that you can create your own weapons, that makes every battle different from another, keeping it from getting repetitive, and you have to master that aspect too if you want to have good weapons. The plot is unique, very original, not the tipycal hero-has-to-save-the-world-collecting-crystals-and-stopping-a-villian, the characters are also a lot more complex than many characters from other games, the battle system requires all the attention from the player, if you want to survive you have to know everything that is requirer in order to kill the enemies, avoiding traps and a lot more. Yasumi Matsuno, creator of this game and another gem from Square, Final Fantasy Tactics, did a marvelous job along with his staff, including the composer of the music Hitoshi Sakimoto. Saying that don´t expect to visit towns and talk to people like in a RPG. The first thing to make clear is that VS is not fully a RPG, is more a hybrid between various genres, there´s some RPG elements but there´s also action and you can explore like in a plataform game. Why not everybody like it?, one of the reasons is having a battle system very different from other games, it´s not easy to swallow at first but after a while you get use to it. Vagrant Story is one of the most underrated games and at the same time one of the best games made it in years.
